A fractional CTO is a senior technology leader who works with a business part-time, providing the strategic technical leadership of a chief technology officer without the cost of a full-time hire. Increasingly, the role is as much about applying AI as about managing engineers.

Overview

Fractional means part-time and ongoing: a day or two a week, or a few days a month, rather than a full-time salaried post. It suits businesses that need senior technical judgement, a founder who should not be making every architecture and vendor decision alone, but that do not have the scale or budget to justify a full-time CTO, often a six-figure salary plus equity.

The role is changing. A few years ago a fractional CTO mostly set strategy, chose technologies and managed a team. Now a large part of the value is deciding where AI fits and getting it built, because one senior person with AI leverage can deliver what used to need a team. For many smaller businesses the honest requirement is not a classic CTO at all, but fractional AI leadership: senior direction on AI with the hands-on implementation included.

When a business needs one

  • Technology decisions are being made by a founder who is guessing, or deferred because nobody owns them.
  • You need senior technical direction but not a full-time hire, and certainly not a full-time salary.
  • The pressing question is increasingly "where does AI fit and who will build it", which a hands-on fractional leader can answer and act on.

Common questions

What is a fractional CTO?

An experienced technology leader who works with a business part-time, giving it the senior technical direction of a chief technology officer without the cost of a full-time hire. They set technical strategy, make build-or-buy calls, and increasingly lead how the business applies AI.

How much does a fractional CTO cost in the UK?

Typically £800 to £1,500 a day, or a monthly retainer of roughly £3,000 to £8,000 depending on the days involved. A fraction of a full-time CTO, which in the UK commonly runs well into six figures plus equity.

What does a fractional CTO do?

They own the technology direction a founder or board cannot: technical strategy, architecture, hiring and vendor choices, and now AI strategy and implementation. The stronger ones in smaller businesses are hands-on, building as well as directing.

Fractional CTO or AI implementation consultant?

If you need ongoing senior ownership of your whole technology function, that is a fractional CTO. If the pressing need is specifically to get AI implemented well, an AI implementation consultant is more focused and often faster to value. For many businesses the real requirement is fractional AI leadership: senior AI direction with the hands-on build included.
