An AI consultant is someone who helps a business work out where artificial intelligence can be applied and, in the stronger cases, implements it rather than only advising. The most useful AI consultants do both halves: the diagnosis and the build.
Overview
The title covers a wide range. At one end are strategy-only consultants who assess opportunities, write recommendations and hand them over. At the other are implementation consultants who do the same diagnosis and then build the systems, integrate them and hand them to the business to own. The gap between advice and a working system is where most AI budgets are lost, so the implementation half is usually where the value is.
Good AI consultants are sector-aware but not sector-bound: the judgement about where AI fits transfers across industries, while the specifics are learned for each business. What should not vary is who does the work. The person who scopes it should be the person who builds it.
What to look for
- They do the diagnosis and the implementation, not a report you then have to find someone else to build.
- The senior person you speak to is the person who will do the work, not a seller handing off to juniors.
- You own what gets built: the prompts, integrations, logic and credentials, with no lock-in.
- Scope and price are agreed up front, against a defined outcome rather than an open-ended day rate.
Common questions
What does an AI consultant do?
They help a business work out where AI would genuinely earn its place, and what to build first. The more useful ones also implement it: they build the system, integrate it and hand it over, rather than producing a strategy and leaving delivery to someone else.
How much does an AI consultant cost in the UK?
It varies by model. Day rates run from a few hundred to well over a thousand pounds; retainers commonly start around £1,500 to £2,000 a month; and fixed-price implementation projects typically run £15,000 to £40,000 by scope. The best value is usually a fixed price agreed up front against a defined outcome.
What is the difference between an AI consultant and an AI agency?
An agency usually wins the work with a senior person and then staffs delivery with a junior team. A single senior consultant does the work themselves. The practical test: ask whether the person you are talking to will be the person building it.
Do I need an AI consultant?
If you can see AI should be doing more but cannot tell which thing to build first, or you have tried and nothing shipped, an AI consultant earns their fee by making that call and getting something live. If you already know exactly what to build and have someone to build it, you may not.

A definition is useful, but the real question is what to build in your business. That is what I do as a hands-on AI implementation consultant.
